What constitutes a happy life? It is a question that has intrigued mankind for centuries. Is it the money, power, status or external pride? A large number of people I have met are fearful in life and insecure of their life conditions like jobs, relationships or financial status. Many folks are either complaining about the circumstances or leading a deplorable life by comparing themselves to others.
Nevertheless, they remain in a comfort zone without learning new skills, working on their fitness or taking a risk in life. They live with false hope and keep praying & wishing for some miracles to turn around their life overnight. They live the same rut life and yet expect different consequences.
In the days of hyper-connectivity when everyone is projecting the digitized version of a grandeur and painting a rosy picture of their life on social media, but nobody is sharing the predicament and setbacks of life that they may be going through in the background. It presents a skewed one-way picture of life.
It is a fact that happiness and sorrow both are part of life. And, the grind and challenges are inevitable as long as there will be life. Thus it is an erroneous judgment to conclude someone’s life based on an apparent surface and the sheer face-value.
The very rudimentary fact of life you must know that you don’t deserve anything in life which you haven’t earned yet. Respect, Money, Fitness or whatever you seek in life are not gifts and entitlements, you have to earn those. There is no privilege and an easy way out.
I have learnt and got everything in my life the hard way: be it skills like Software Development (Coding/Debugging), reducing weight or learning skills like Driving & Swimming. So the basic point remains, you have to work hard to achieve anything by doing, by committing mistakes, and gradually learning from those mistakes the hard way one piece at a time.
It’s your action that will change your life, not your wishful thinking. NOTHING WILL WORK OR CHANGE UNLESS YOU DO.
Many people believe that it’s the money, status or achieving some goals will bring them happiness. However, they are oblivion to the fact that in the end NOBODY CARES and IT MEANS NOTHING even after.
Yes, you heard it right, it means NOTHING. Even if you achieved what you wanted to achieve, nobody cares. It was just your goal or life pursuit, but none of one’s business.
It is the disappointment that you sign up for if you are trying to achieve something to prove to anyone. Your pursuit and results must be for your own peace of mind and satisfaction, not for some external validation or recognition.
Notwithstanding finishing a goal successfully, you feel hollow inside and it means nothing much thereafter. Many notable scientists, sports personalities and public figures have gone into depression even after acquiring the grand success in their respective field.
There are examples like Michael Phelps and Tiger Woods just to name a few. The reason is pretty simple, goals & results don’t make you happy for long, it’s the pursuit of the goals that does. You have been consistently following a routine for a long time and suddenly you feel a deep void once you have achieved your goals or finished the task which kept you occupied all this while. You have no more reasons to get out of your bed early in the morning.
The secret of life is to GET GOING and keep the fire burning even if you have achieved some of your goals. Ultimately it is the pursuit, process and the purpose that keeps you alive and sparkling, not the end goal.
In the end, money or status is the byproduct of your hard work & self-investments over time and the value proposition that you bring to the table.

If you become physically strong, eventually you will get mentally strong. Fitness is the lifestyle, you have to enjoy the fitness activity or it will be short-lived.
Family & Friends
Need I say more. We all know that we humans are emotional beings, we seek belongingness and connections with others. When you hit the setbacks and things are not going well in your life, your family is the strongest support system for you. What is the point when you have all the money and achievements in life, but there is nobody to share it with.
By education here I don’t mean degrees or certifications(essential though they are). What I mean is how enlightened your mind is and how well read you are as an individual who can make the sound judgments in life. How multi-faceted your personality is who is not biased by just his own thinking but can take the difference of opinions with a grace.
Reading tons of books, traveling to new places, and meeting people from a diverse background will expand your horizons and offers you different perspectives on life.
It means working on your craft. We spend more than half of our life working. It’s not an exaggeration to say that “life is work and work is life”. If you work on your craft and strive to do best on what you work on a daily basis, it will increase your self-esteem and boost your self-love.
Impact and Legacy
Last but not least, one of the important human needs is the need for Self-actualization. Self-actualization means once you have achieved all the basic needs, you come to the point in life where you want to make an impact in other’s life.
You want to help others achieve their life goals. You want to give back to society and community. You grow beyond yourself and rise above your needs to give back to the people around you. It is the joy of giving that drives you.
